Issues in Social Justice, Second Edition
The study of social justice is a study of conflict. Within the context of power, dissenters vie for varying forms of change against adversaries who are more likely to resist change. Power is fostered and preserved through unequal relations.
History has shown us that collective identity is achieved through shared disenfranchisement. It is through the process of perceived and/or realized marginalization that social movements form. To dissenting factions who feel they are marginalized, change is considered a required process to achieve equality.
Whether it is the marginalization of homosexuals within a broader religious structure or the State, or the disenfranchisement of the homeless within society, or the economically disadvantaged within a broader system, or the overrepresentation of racial minorities in prisons, each dissenting faction has a story to tell. It is here where their voices are heard.
This book will examine the complexity of each struggle and the implications of its process. These issues form a timeline in the evolution of social justice. History has shown us justice cannot be guaranteed. The struggles within each issue of this book tell us that there are still those who wish to find it.
