About Dr. David M. Barry
David M. Barry attained a PhD in Sociology from Western Michigan University. His concentrations include comparative sociology and the sociology of religion. He holds an MA in Sociology and a BA in Sociology and History.
Dr. Barry is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology at Indiana University–South Bend. He has also taught at Western Michigan University, Kellogg Community College, and Lake Michigan College.
Dr. Barry has taught a variety of sociology courses including: Principles of Sociology, Modern Social Problems, Methods of Data Collection, Introduction to Social Theory, The Role of Religion in Modern Society, The Sociology of Tolerance and Acceptance, and the Non-Western World.
Dr. Barry’s scholarship, including regional and national conference presentations, nationally competitive workshops, and publications, has explored ethno-religious identities, nationalism, xenophobia, and social tolerance. His research often applies comparative-historical methodologies to investigate such cross-cultural social phenomena. Influenced by his time living abroad, this work has a particular focus on post-communist societies.
Dr. Barry has co-authored several book chapters (Issues in Social Justice, 2009) and one peer-reviewed article in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. Upcoming projects include adaptations of his dissertation titled: 'Popular perceptions of the relationship between religious and ethnic identities: A comparative study of ethnodoxy in contemporary Russia and beyond' and contributing chapters in Issues in Social Justice, Volume 2 (2014) by Landon Elsemere Press.
